In the next five to ten years, Saskatchewan will face a critical management shortage. The rate of retirement will be greater than the rate at which many businesses can replace them. At Saskatchewan Polytechnic, we have heard echoes of this statistic from our industry partners. They have great people but simply not enough who have the knowledge and skills to lead within their organizations. It is also something we hear from our graduates. They have the practical skills needed to succeed in their current positions, but they are ready to take on more responsibility. They want to develop the management skills they need to move up.
This was why the Bachelor of Applied Management (BAMgt) was created. Launched in fall of 2020, the goal of the BAMgt program is to provide the bridge needed by journeypersons and non-business post-secondary graduates to gain that knowledge to be able to advance their careers.
Traditional business degrees require students to complete electives and choose specializations during a four-year program. For the BAMgt, we consider your previous education and experience to be equivalent to part of a degree. In as little as two years, we teach students a wide range of business classes in areas like human resources, accounting, change management, finance, marketing and communications, project management, and more.
Another unique feature of the BAMgt program is our flexible learning framework which is organized for working professionals. The courses are offered over Zoom in the evenings or completely online, making it easier for students to attend classes around their busy schedules. This means that with a secure internet connection, classes can be attended from anywhere in Canada. We currently have students from Vancouver Island to Winnipeg and across Saskatchewan!
As part of the flexible learning framework, students can also attend the program on either a full- or part-time basis, taking as little as one class per semester. Part-time study does increase the length of time to complete the degree, but we have found it has been an integral part of our students’ success, allowing them to adjust their schedules based on what is happening in other aspects of their lives.
