Canada’s automotive sector helps drive jobs, investment, innovation, and economic growth in communities across the country. Canada North Vehicles is a national initiative designed to identify Canadian-built vehicles and strengthen recognition of Canada’s world-class automotive industry. By improving recognition of Canadian-built vehicles, the Canada North Vehicles Initiative can help support future public sector fleet procurement discussions by raising awareness of the quality, durability, and long-term value of vehicles manufactured in Canada. It also highlights the broader economic benefits of investing in Canadian manufacturing and strengthening domestic supply chains.

The Town of New Tecumseth: Automotive Advocacy

In Simcoe County, that connection is especially visible. As home to Honda Canada Manufacturing in Alliston, the Town of New Tecumseth has a front-row seat to the opportunities and challenges shaping Canada’s automotive industry and is proud to advocate for its long-term success.

Introducing the Simcoe Auto Mayors

The Simcoe Auto Mayors bring together municipalities with strong ties to Canada’s automotive sector, from component supply networks to vehicle manufacturing. The Town of New Tecumseth through the Simcoe Auto Mayors, has advocated directly to the federal government for policies that that strengthen Canada’s automotive sector, encourage investment, support competitiveness, and help protect jobs and economic opportunities in communities across the country.

This advocacy focuses on four priorities: recognizing Canadian-built hybrid vehicles, suspension of Quebec and British Columbia EV mandates, ensuring fair market competition, and embedding the Canada North Vehicles Initiative into the Federal Automotive Strategy.

By working collaboratively and speaking with a united voice, the Simcoe Auto Mayors continue to champion policies that support the long-term success and resilience of Canada’s automotive industry.

Driving Canada’s Automotive Future – The Canada North Vehicles Initiative

The Town of New Tecumseth is the founding municipality of the initiative, working alongside the Simcoe Auto Mayors as well as industry and government partners to strengthen recognition of Canadian automotive excellence. The initiative aims to build greater understanding of Canada’s automotive sector and the role it plays in supporting communities, workers, manufacturers, and supply chains across the country.

The Government of Canada, through the Prime Minister’s Office, has acknowledged this advocacy and expressed its commitment to continuing discussions on ways to strengthen Canada’s automotive sector. Through ongoing collaboration with government and industry partners, the Town of New Tecumseth and the Simcoe Auto Mayors remain focused on supporting a strong, competitive, and resilient automotive industry for future generations.
